The Noir Series is a homage to majestic black and white landscape photography. This series took me over 18 months just to work out the design, concept and execution of the idea before I even set brush to canvas. Simplifying a landscapes color palette to tonal values only, I have sought to replicate the ambiance of black and white photography. However, it was not simply switching to just black and white paint! Even in photography there are subtle tonal values of warm grey and cool grey that the photographer plays with and adjusts. Likewise, I had to use greyed out or desaturation to mimic those same tonal values. To give each piece a more spiritual or metaphysical ambiance, I decided to add some metallic gold into the mix. The gold brought out more tonal values in the greyed out paint and pulls the viewers eye in by mimicking light reflection and light refraction. Finally, I give you The Noir Series; my own personal adaptation and interpretation of black and white landscape photography.
